An Argumentation Scheme for Debunking Arguments
I've recently been going down a rabbit hole in the philosophical literature of "Debunking Arguments". A debunking argument tries to undermine the epistemic status of some class of beliefs by tracing them to a genealogy (an origin/explanation) that makes their truth epistemically accidental. The debunker doesn’t have to show the beliefs are false; rather, they aim to show you lack justification (or knowledge) for holding them given how they were formed. There are two major kinds of debunking arguments: local debunking and global debunking. Local debunking targets a restricted domain while global debunking aims at very wide domains (such as all normative beliefs). While reading the literature, I've come to realize that variations (mostly watered down and not technical) of debunking style arguments frequently arise in public discourse, conspiracies, and media. I began to wonder if I could formalize an argumentation scheme that captures not only philosophical elements, but also variants within these other realms of discourse. In this post, I want I'll first introduce these arguments from the philosophical perspective. I will then go through a few papers to show how different authors think of debunking. I'll then construct a generic argumentation scheme that captures the core elements across the literature. Lastly, we will apply that scheme to something practical.
To begin, I'll provide a list of the articles I've been reading. I'll only be focusing on the first four, but I will reference content from the rest of them periodically.

Lets begin with a broad overview from across these articles. The core structure for most debunking arguments normally looks like this:
- Genealogical Claim: Your belief that P is best explained by process C (e.g., evolution, culture, affect, heuristics), which is insensitive to the truth of P (it didn’t aim to track truth about P).
- Insensitivity → Defeat: If a belief’s explanation is insensitive to truth in the relevant way, then (absent further support) you have an undercutting defeater for that belief: you’re not entitled to trust it.
- No Independent Vindication: You lack independent, non-question-begging evidence that your belief-forming process here is reliable or that P is true.
- Therefore: you should suspend judgment (or lower confidence) in P.
Philosophically, this is an undercutting (not rebutting) strategy: it removes justification by attacking the link between method and truth. A common type of debunking strategy in philosophy can be seen with Evolutionary Debunking Arguments. The key idea is that natural selection favors traits that enhance fitness, not truth for its own sake. If our moral/evaluative beliefs were largely shaped by selection pressures (e.g., favoring cooperation within groups, discouraging free-riding, promoting care for kin), then the content of those beliefs might be an evolutionary byproduct. If so, the correlation between our moral beliefs and moral truth (especially if moral truths are stance-independent) is suspiciously lucky. This type of debunking argument is used to conclude that our confidence in moral realism (specifically, metaethical theories grounded in naturalistic philosophies) should be reduced. I personally do not find these arguments convincing. There are many counter-arguments that reduce the force of this inference. For example, If the EDA undermines moral cognition, it seems to threaten epistemic norms (what we should believe) and even mathematics (abstracta aren’t causally accessible). If you won’t go global, don’t go local—so either blunt the debunking force or embrace wide skepticism. In other words, it sort of has a scorched earth effect. Other counter-arguments argue that our faculties are generally reliable across many domains; small perturbations in genealogies wouldn’t make most mature, reflectively endorsed moral judgments arbitrary. (Sometimes called “safety” or “stability” replies.) Another common class of counter-arguments I find convincing are those pointing out that not all genealogies debunk; some vindicate. For example, showing how cooperative pressures led us to recognize genuinely reason-giving facts about others’ welfare can bolster, not undercut, justification—especially once we add reflection, argument, and cross-cultural scrutiny. But I am not here to specifically respond to this style of debunking. I just brought it up to shed light on the fact that this is an active area of argument within the philosophy of ethics. Global debunking arguments scale up the genealogical worry. Instead of just moral beliefs, it targets all normative beliefs, all evaluative beliefs, or even common-sense or modal beliefs. If the etiological story about why we have certain beliefs is broadly truth-insensitive (evolutionary pressures, cultural drift, affective heuristics), then why stop at morality? For GDA's, there are typically two styles of response: the self-defeat charge and localizing. If the GDA undercuts our confidence in all normative/epistemic beliefs, it threatens the premises of the argument itself (which rely on epistemic norms), indicating self-defeat. If the same style of reasoning would debunk mathematics, induction, or epistemic norms, you may have proved too much. Either accept radical skepticism or restrict the premise. If you can show the genealogy is selectively truth-insensitive (e.g., disgust, dominance, parochialism) while other parts of cognition are anchored to worldly structures in ways that support reliability, you can retain epistemic support. We are essentially asking; is the cited cause really independent of truth? Or does it select for sensitivity to features that overlap with the target truths?
Now let's take a look at "Debunking Arguments" by Korman. What makes something a debunking argument is a move from a claim about (the lack of) an explanatory connection between our mental states and the putative facts they’re about to a negative verdict about the epistemic status of those states. In his words, what unifies these arguments is “the transition from a premise about what does or doesn’t explain why we have certain mental states to a negative assessment of their epistemic status.” He says all the disparate debates can be organized into two general templates:
Skeptical Debunking
- Our attitudes about some domain D and the D-facts don’t stand in explanatory relation E.
- If so, those attitudes have some negative epistemic status S (e.g., unjustified).
- Therefore, our D-attitudes have status S.
Conditional Debunking
- A certain kind of theorist T is committed to there being no such explanatory relation.
- If so, T is committed to her attitudes having negative status S.
- Therefore, T is committed to that negative status.
Each instance should make explicit: (i) the domain D; (ii) which explanatory relation E is claimed absent; (iii) which attitude type is targeted (belief, intuition, experience); and (iv) the specific status S (e.g., “unjustified” or “can’t confer justification”). Conditional versions also specify the class of theorists T (e.g., realists, Platonists). Every debunking argument has an explanatory premise (no appropriate tie between facts and attitudes) and an epistemic premise (recognizing this absence undercuts warrant). Korman distinguishes two strategies for defending the explanatory premise; negative and positive. You can argue target facts couldn't in principle explain our attitudes (negative) or you can give a “sparse” genealogy—an explanation of our attitudes that makes no reference to the target facts (e.g., evolutionary or proximate psychological stories). If that sparse story suffices, adding D-facts looks unparsimonious. The epistemic premise is then cast as a defeater: once you see your beliefs arose for reasons unrelated to the relevant facts, their justification is undermined (at least for those exposed to the debunking story).
Korman then maps out possible responses; some of which attack the explanatory premise and some attack the epistemic premise. He shows how this schema recurs across many domains (morality, mathematics, color, laws, religion, time, grounding, free will, etc.) and even in (nearly) global forms that challenge the reliability of our methods wholesale (often via evolutionary genealogy and the idea of adaptive “reliable misrepresentation”). A key point is that by themselves, they don’t prove error or eliminativism; at most they remove warrant. The facts could still be there and our beliefs could even be true “by sheer chance.”
Next, let's take a look at "Global Debunking Arguments" by Andrew Moon. Moon defines a global defeater as a reason that makes all of one’s beliefs unjustified; a global debunking argument is an argument that concludes you have such a defeater. He defends their possibility against the thought that debunking must be local; in other words, that global debunkers are not self-defeating and they're . Moon classifies GDAs by the structure of the defeater they give for R (“my faculties are generally reliable”):
- Pure-undercutter: You get a reason to doubt the reliability of the process that produced R, but no evidence for ¬R. (E.g., a pill that targets just the mechanism that yields belief in R.)
- Undercutter-because-rebutter: First you get evidence against R (a rebutter), and because of that you now have an undercutter for each of your beliefs (including R).
- Undercutter-while-rebutter: The same information both lowers the probability of R and directly undercuts the reliability of the specific faculties that delivered your evidence for R—independently of the rebuttal.
Moon describes something called the "epistemic origin story solution", in which some appeals can block global defeaters. He essentially distinguishes instances where some of these types of responses are acceptable and others are unacceptable; concluding that in many instances, once a global defeater is established, you cannot reason your way out of that bind. Moon’s EO-Solution is essentially a targeted filter for what defeater-deflectors are admissible in global contexts—only elements of your epistemic origin story that make R probable and that you were already justified in believing. This screens out quick fixes (like conditionalizing on R or “we got lucky”) and clarifies how certain mind–content theories or theistic design stories (if independently justified) could help a naturalist/theist, respectively. I am personally not satisfied with his analysis. On what grounds does one argue that an origin story about R is independently justified without assuming this condition to be satisfied? It seems like an unsatisfiable criteria; determining whether the criteria is applicable for a given story also seems somewhat arbitrary.
Now moving on to Diego E. Machuca’s view of global evolutionary debunking arguments (EDAs). Machuca looks at global evolutionary arguments—ones that don’t just aim at a domain (e.g., morality) but at the reliability of our belief-forming faculties as a whole. He sets up a pair: a global debunking argument (EDA) and a matching vindicating argument (EVA). The global EDA (self-defeat worry). He formulates an undercutting EDA:
- Our belief-forming processes were shaped by natural selection.
- Natural selection aims at survival/reproduction.
- False-belief formation can be as fitness-enhancing as true-belief formation.
- Therefore, our belief that our processes are reliable is unjustified (agnosticism).
Machuca stresses that this is an undercutter (it removes justification rather than concluding falsity) and that it aims at agnosticism about our cognitive reliability. He then develops the classic self-defeat charge: the very premises/inference rely on the same cognitive system the argument tells us to doubt, so the EDA undermines itself. In the global EVA (epistemic circularity worry). Swap (3) with:
- 3*) Truth-tracking beliefs are more fitness-enhancing than non-tracking beliefs.
- 4*) So, our belief-forming processes are reliable (justified).
Machuca argues the EVA looks epistemically circular: to assemble and assess the premises and the inference you already rely on the very faculties whose reliability you’re trying to vindicate. He distinguishes logical from epistemic circularity and says the EVA is the latter. Because the global EDA tends toward self-defeat and the EVA toward circularity, reason appears to push us into an aporetic dilemma; Machuca’s recommended attitude is suspension of judgment about the global reliability of our faculties (a cautiously Pyrrhonian skepticism about reason itself). Are there “virtuous” circles? He critically reviews Alston/Bergmann-style defenses of benign epistemic circularity (e.g., track-record arguments for perception) and presses that embracing circularity to avoid skepticism may be question-begging or dialectically unsatisfying. He emphasizes the live pull of both circularity and regress, reinforcing the sense of aporia. So while Moon claims global debunking is possible, Machuca remains skeptical and Korman is rather neutral.
Lastly, let's look at Kahane's Evolutionary Debunking Arguments. Kahane treats debunking as a familiar epistemic move: explain a belief by a process that’s “off-track” with respect to the relevant truths, and you thereby undercut its justification. He gives the template:
- Causal premise: S believes p because X (aetiology/genealogy).
- Epistemic premise: X isn’t truth-tracking for the truths in question.
- Conclusion: S’s belief that p is unjustified (an undercutting defeat, not a rebuttal of p).
He stresses that this isn’t the “genetic fallacy”: a belief’s origin matters only when the origin leaves no role for truth-tracking processes or when post-hoc “reasons” are themselves products of the same off-track source. Debunking is thus especially forceful where justification bottoms out in intuition. Kahane’s big diagnostic point: targeted EDAs presuppose metaethical objectivism. If value is not stance-independent, the worry that evolution didn’t “track” objective evaluative facts dissolves. Hence many widely used EDAs only bite against objectivists; anti-objectivists can simply shrug. To resist the global causal premise, Kahane suggests responding that maybe not all evaluative beliefs are evolution-saturated; diversity and culture complicate a sweeping causal claim. That yields, at best, a graded skepticism (lowered confidence where evolutionary influence is strongest), not vindication
Okay, now that we have briefly seen what these arguments are, I think it would be useful to construct an argumentation scheme that captures these nuances from the philosophical literature. We will call it "Debunking from Off-Track Genealogy":
- P1. (Genealogical/Explanatory Claim): Agent S’s attitude(s) A toward proposition(s) p (in domain D) are best explained by causal process C (e.g., evolution, culture, affect, propaganda, incentives), which produced A.
- P2. (Truth-Insensitivity Claim): Process C is off-track with respect to p: in the relevant range of cases, whether p is true makes little or no difference to whether C produces A (i.e., C is not appropriately truth-tracking for D).
- P3. (No Independent Vindication Claim): S lacks independent, non-question-begging grounds that (i) C is reliable about p (or D), or (ii) A is justified apart from C (e.g., argument, evidence, reliable method distinct from C).
- (Optional) P4. (Scope Claim): C substantially explains many or all of S’s attitudes in D (local scope) or across domains (global scope).
- C. Therefore, S’s attitude A toward p (or set of attitudes in D) is defeated (undercut): S should suspend judgment or reduce confidence substantially.
Exceptions / Defeater-Deflectors (to be shown by the target)
- E1 (Third-Factor/Convergence). There exists a “third factor” T that explains both why C would produce A and why p is true (or why methods like C are reliable in D).
- E2 (Explanationist Tie). The facts about p (or D) help explain A—causally, constitutively, semantically, or via reduction—so the genealogy is not truth-insensitive after all.
- E3 (Independent Justification). S has independent evidence/argument for p that does not rely (or does not primarily rely) on C.
- E4 (Plenitude/Safety). Even if C is partly off-track, A is not precarious (unsafe/insensitive) because there are many nearby ways of being right or robust cross-checks that stabilize A.
- E5 (Scope Restriction). C does not, in fact, explain A (or does so weakly/partially), or P4 overstates C’s reach (the argument illegitimately “goes global”).
Variant 1. Skeptical Debunking (Local)
Same as Core, with P4 fixed to a specific domain D (e.g., moral beliefs, policy preferences, religious credences, consumer tastes).
Variant 2. Conditional Debunking (Targeting a Theory/Position)
Replace P1–P3 with:
- P1 (Commitment Claim).* Theorist T’s own commitments imply that there is no appropriate explanatory tie between D-facts and D-attitudes (e.g., because D-facts are causally inert, or T’s semantics rules out such ties).
- P2 (Meta-Epistemic Claim).* If there is no such tie, D-attitudes lack justification (or cannot confer justification).
- C.* Therefore, by T’s own lights, D-attitudes are unjustified.
Variant 3. Global Debunking (Across the Board)
Strengthen P4:
- P4G. The off-track process C (e.g., evolution selecting for fitness, or a reliability-degrading pill/event) substantially explains S’s belief-forming methods broadly, including S’s higher-order belief R (“my faculties are broadly reliable”).
- CG. Therefore S acquires a global defeater: S’s beliefs, including R, are unjustified (until the defeater is removed).
Hidden Assumptions (what must be true in the background)
- Explanatory Priority. The cited genealogy really does best explain why S believes p (or holds A), not merely a possible contributor.
- Relevant Notion of Truth-Tracking. “Off-track” means the right thing (modal safety/sensitivity; counterfactual dependence; calibration to the target property).
- Bridge from Explanatory Gap to Defeat. Recognizing a lack of truth-tracking connection provides an undercutting defeater for A.
- No Quiet Vindication. There isn’t already independent warrant for p that survives the genealogy (or the genealogy doesn’t quietly presuppose that such warrant is insufficient).
- Stability of A. A is not stabilized by reflection, cross-domain triangulation, or diverse evidence pools (if it is, defeat may not transmit).
- Correct Scope Setting. The debunker’s causal story fits (local or global) and isn’t over-generalized from cherry-picked cases.
- Non-Circularity Constraint (Global). In global variants, attempts to vindicate reliability aren’t epistemically circular in a way that begs the question (Machuca’s circularity warning).
- Self-Defeat Manageability (Global). If the argument threatens its own premises, the debunker assumes that self-defeat doesn’t erase its defeating force (Moon), or else narrows scope to avoid collapse.
- Meta-level Fit. In evaluative domains, the argument tacitly presupposes some form of objectivism (Kahane); if anti-objectivism is true, “off-track” may be ill-posed.
- No Illicit Rebuttal Drift. The move stays undercutting (attacking the link), not an unargued slide into rebuttal (attacking p’s truth).
- Public Accessibility. The audience can, in principle, evaluate the genealogical and truth-insensitivity claims (they’re not purely speculative hand-waving).
Critical Questions (CQs)
A. About the Genealogy (P1)
- CQ-A1 (Fit & Coverage). Does C actually explain S’s attitude A toward p (or D-attitudes), or is the story selective/speculative? What is the empirical, historical, or psychological support?
- CQ-A2 (Comparative Explanatory Power). Are there rival explanations (learning, argument, perception-like access, expert testimony) that equal or exceed C in simplicity, scope, or predictive success?
- CQ-A3 (Causal Grain). Is C pitched at the right level (proximate vs distal causes)? Could a distal cause (e.g., evolution) be consistent with proximal truth-tracking (e.g., reasoning, measurement)?
- CQ-A4 (Individuation of A). Which attitudes are being explained—raw intuitions, considered judgments, policy endorsements, narrow vs wide reflective states? Does the genealogy reach the matured belief or only a first-pass reaction?
- CQ-A5 (Heterogeneity & Drift). How homogeneous are the attitudes across cultures/contexts? Do we see divergence that C can’t easily model? (Over-homogeneity or over-heterogeneity can both challenge the fit.)
B. About Truth-Insensitivity (P2)
- CQ-B1 (What notion of “truth-tracking”?) Are we using sensitivity, safety, reliability, calibration, or counterfactual dependence? Does C really fail that standard?
- CQ-B2 (Third-Factor Overlap). Could C be selecting for features (e.g., harm detection, predictive accuracy, coherence) that correlate with the truth about p (third-factor convergence)?
- CQ-B3 (Local vs Global Correlation). Even if C is off-track in general, is it off-track here (for this p or subdomain)?
- CQ-B4 (Robustness Checks). Under perturbations (different stakes, framings, vantage points), do attitudes produced by C move in ways a truth-tracking method would?
- CQ-B5 (Illicit Rebuttal). Is the critic smuggling in a rebuttal (claiming p is false) under the guise of undercutting (claiming the route to p is unreliable)?
C. About Independent Vindication (P3) & Defeater-Deflectors
- CQ-C1 (Surviving Evidence). What evidence, arguments, measurements, or cross-modal checks for p survive even if C explains the initial attitude?
- CQ-C2 (Method Pluralism). Are there independent methods (experimentation, formal proof, triangulation across disciplines) that underwrite p without leaning on C?
- CQ-C3 (Origin-Story Constraint). If the target appeals to background Y to resist defeat, is Y (i) antecedently justified and (ii) genuinely part of the subject’s epistemic origin story explaining why their methods are reliable (vs a post-hoc patch)?
- CQ-C4 (Costs of Third-Factors). If a third-factor T is invoked, does T (a) non-trivially link C to truth and (b) avoid collapsing into circularity, mystery, or ad hoc stipulation?
- CQ-C5 (Strength of the Deflection). Does the deflection restore full justification, or only mitigate the hit (lowering the required confidence drop)?
D. About Scope (P4) — Local vs Global
- CQ-D1 (Overreach). Is the debunking claim calibrated to the actual reach of C, or does it leap from “some Xs are off-track” to “most/all Xs are unjustified”?
- CQ-D2 (Fence-Sitting & Consistency). If local EDAs are embraced, why aren’t parallel EDAs (or a global EDA) also embraced, given similar genealogies elsewhere? (Kahane’s consistency audit.)
- CQ-D3 (Domain Differences). Are there principled reasons some domains (math, perception) resist the genealogy while others (taste, politics) don’t?
- CQ-D4 (Containment). If global defeat is alleged, does the case show the right kind (pure undercutter vs undercutter-because-rebutter vs undercutter-while-rebutter), and is the path from that to “everything is defeated” valid?
E. About the Epistemic Bridge (from P1–P3 to C)
- CQ-E1 (Why does explanatory absence defeat?) What’s the epistemic norm connecting a lack of explanatory tie to loss of justification here? Is it a safety/insensitivity criterion, a “no epistemic coincidence” norm, or a direct explanatory constraint?
- CQ-E2 (Induction-Friendliness). Does the chosen norm avoid collateral damage (e.g., to induction, testimony, perception), or does it make everyday knowledge too “lucky”?
- CQ-E3 (Degree of Defeat). Should the upshot be suspension or merely reduced confidence? What credence shift is warranted by the demonstrated off-trackness?
F. Global-Specific (Self-Defeat & Circularity)
- CQ-F1 (Self-Defeat). If the argument debunks the reliability of the very reasoning used to state and endorse it, does the debunker accept that self-defeating arguments can still defeat (and if so, how)?
- CQ-F2 (Circular Vindication). Are proposed vindications of reliability epistemically circular (using the very faculties at issue), and if so, are they benign, vicious, or dialectically unsatisfying?
- CQ-F3 (Exit Routes). If a global defeater lands, what non-inferential routes (pragmatic actions, new experiences, independent evidence) are proposed to remove it? Are those routes credible/available?
G. Metaethical / Metanormative Preconditions (for evaluative cases)
- CQ-G1 (Objectivism Presupposed?). Does the debunking rely on stance-independent value/fact? If anti-objectivism holds, is “off-track” still well-defined?
- CQ-G2 (Selective Pressure). If the debunker says evolution is not truth-tracking for value, is there evidence it couldn’t track naturalistic evaluative features (e.g., welfare, cooperation) that a realist might identify with or ground the values in?
- CQ-G3 (Mixed Genealogies). How do cultural learning, reflection, and argument interact with evolutionary influences? Are we debunking pre-theoretic intuitions or also the outputs of sustained critical reflection?
H. Dialogue-Level / Pragmatic CQs
- CQ-H1 (Burden of Proof). Who bears which burden at which stage (establishing C, showing off-trackness, demonstrating lack of independent support)?
- CQ-H2 (Stakes & Practical Up-shot). Given the stakes, what degree of defeat is action-guiding? Is “suspend” practicable or do we adopt a provisional credence drop?
- CQ-H3 (Symmetry Checks). If the same genealogy applies to the debunker’s own beliefs (including the meta-level ones), is the standard applied symmetrically?
Now that we have established the scheme and seen examples in the philosophical literature, let's move to a more practical example. Once you become familiar with this argument, you will see the pattern everywhere. In this example, I'd like to show how climate-change skeptics mount debunking arguments, how to interrogate it, and then how to flip it on its head. Claim (target): “Human-caused climate change is a serious, urgent problem.”:
- P1 – Genealogy. People (and scientists) believe this because of media incentives, political agendas, grant funding pressures, and social conformity in academia and tech. These forces caused the belief to spread.
- P2 – Off-track. Those forces are aimed at attention, money, and group loyalty, not at truth about climate physics, so they’re off-track for the claim’s truth.
- P3 – No independent vindication. Ordinary people can’t check complex models; even scientists are trapped in publish-or-perish and echo chambers—so there isn’t independent support that escapes those forces.
- (P4 – Scope, optional). These forces shape most climate beliefs in media, policy, and science.
- Conclusion (defeasible). So confidence in “serious, urgent anthropogenic climate change” should be suspended or significantly lowered. (That’s the classic “debunk from off-track genealogy” pattern.)
This might be one of the most common climate change denial tactics; debunking argumentation. Let's apply the critical questions to this scheme:
A. Genealogy checks (P1)
- CQ-A1 Fit & Coverage: Do media and politics really best explain why climate scientists hold the view—or do decades of measurements (surface temps, ocean heat content, satellite data), lab physics (CO₂ absorption), and independent datasets explain it better?
- CQ-A2 Comparative Explanatory Power: If the same belief shows up across hundreds of independent institutions and countries with opposed politics, is “pressure + conformity” still the best explanation?
- CQ-A3 Causal Grain: Even if funding and headlines affect which studies trend, do they explain away core physical results (e.g., spectroscopy of greenhouse gases, energy budget measurements)? Distal causes (politics) can co-exist with proximal truth-tracking (measurement, cross-validation).
- CQ-A4 Individuation: Are you debunking public talking points or peer-reviewed inference chains (data → model → prediction → out-of-sample check)? The genealogy might reach the first but not the second.
B. Off-track (P2)
- CQ-B1 Which truth-tracking standard? Are you claiming lack of sensitivity/safety/reliability? What would success look like if a method were truth-tracking here (e.g., independent reconstructions matching, model hindcasts passing tests)?
- CQ-B2 Third-factor overlap: Could reputation/funding correlate with actually being right because journals, grants, and media reward predictive accuracy over time? (Third-factor T = “predictive success”).
- CQ-B4 Robustness checks: When measurements come from independent systems (buoys, satellites, ice cores) and still line up, doesn’t that look like truth-tracking behavior?
C. Independent vindication (P3)
- CQ-C1 Surviving Evidence: What evidence would remain even if media/politics vanished? (e.g., lab physics of CO₂, Mauna Loa CO₂ record, ocean heat content trends, retreating glaciers tracked by surveyors).
- CQ-C2 Method pluralism: Are there multiple independent methods converging? If so, the genealogy doesn’t undercut all of them at once.
- CQ-C3 Origin-story constraint (Moon-style): If the skeptic adds “but I also trust engineers’ thermodynamics,” is that part of their epistemic origin story explaining why they’re reliable here—or a post-hoc patch?
D. Scope (P4)
- CQ-D1 Overreach: Does your story about media really justify downgrading instrument readings and laboratory constants? That’s jumping from the public narrative to the measurement pipeline.
- CQ-D3 Domain differences: Why should politics corrupt satellite radiance retrievals more than, say, bridge engineering? What’s special about this domain?
E. Bridge to defeat (P1–P3 → C)
- CQ-E1 Why does this genealogy defeat? Spell out the norm: “If belief B is produced by C and C doesn’t track truth about p, then B is unjustified.” Does your norm avoid collateral damage (e.g., it won’t also debunk medicine, macro-economics, or pandemic models wholesale)?
- CQ-E3 Degree of defeat: Are you arguing for suspension or just “be somewhat less confident”? Which practical decisions should change?
F. Global traps (self-defeat & circularity)
- CQ-F1 Self-defeat check: If “politics and incentives corrupt complex inference,” doesn’t that also debunk your contrarian sources (think tanks, influencers) who live in the same incentive soup?
- CQ-F3 Exit routes: If you grant a serious undercutter landed, what would remove it? (Open code, replication archives, adversarial audits?) If those exist, does your defeat still hold?
G. Meta-level (useful in value-laden climate debates)
- CQ-G1 Objectivism presupposed?: Are you debunking facts (temperature trends) or values (how urgent)? Different geneaologies matter for each, and the “off-track” test differs.
The skeptic’s debunking case looks weak once you ask for (i) best-explanation status, (ii) cross-method convergence, and (iii) a non-overreaching bridge from genealogy to defeat. You don’t need to prove the target true—just show the debunking under-motivates defeat. Notice that we can simply flip the argument, and then evaluate how well it performs with respect to these critical questions:
- P1 – Genealogy. Skeptical attitudes persist because of identity-protective cognition, partisan media ecosystems, and industry-funded messaging that reward doubt.
- P2 – Off-track. Those forces are aimed at group cohesion and profit, not at tracking climate truth.
- P3 – No independent vindication. Most skeptics rely on blogs, cherry-picked anomalies, or misread uncertainty; few do primary analysis.
- Conclusion. So skepticism is unjustified.
Running the same critical questions (while being fair and symmetric):
- CQ-A2 Comparative power: Do these forces explain all skeptical positions, including those from credentialed scientists raising methodological issues (e.g., particular feedback estimates)? If not, don’t over-generalize.
- CQ-B3 Local vs global: Maybe some memes are off-track but particular critiques (measurement biases, cloud feedback parameterization, scenario baselines) are not. Separate them.
- CQ-C1 Surviving evidence: Are there any genuine anomalies or model-data mismatches that remain after quality control? If yes, those pockets aren’t defeated by the genealogy.
- CQ-E1 Bridge norm: Don’t slip from “industry PR exists” to “therefore counterevidence never justifies anything.” That would be illicit rebuttal drift.
- CQ-D1 Scope: Keep the debunking local (PR-amplified talking points), not global (all dissent).
The pro-consensus debunking is clearly stronger when evaluated by critical questions. I think I'll end here. I just hope its somewhat clear by now how these arguments function and where they can be seen "in the wild". They can be wielded for a variety of reasons; often to motivate skepticism about a topic that is rather uncontroversial. But now we have the basic tools for identifying and critically appraising such arguments.
